Technical Disciplines

The American Society of Appraisers is a multi-discipline, non-profit, international organization of professional appraisers representing all appraisal disciplines: Appraisal Review and Management, Business Valuation, Gems and Jewelry, Machinery and Technical Specialties, Personal Property and Real Property. Our mission is to foster the public trust of our members and the appraisal profession through compliance with the highest levels of ethical and professional standards.

Business Valuation

Business valuation professionals provide independent, unbiased opinions of value for business concerns of multiple natures and sizes. They also value intangible business assets such as copyrights, employment agreements, trademarks, securities and goodwill. These professional appraisers prepare merger and acquisition studies, employee stock ownership plan feasibility analyses and other similar financial studies. They may be involved in appraisals performed for estate and gift tax returns, buy-sell agreements, securities litigation, equitable distribution in matrimonial matters and many other purposes.

Gems & Jewelry

Although small in number, ASA is the acknowledged leader in gems and jewelry appraising – the appraisers Federal agencies turn to most often to perform the most sensitive assignments.

Our titleholders (Accredited Member, Accredited Senior Appraiser and Master Gemologist Appraiser®) are among those that consumers trust the most for all their varied needs, from insurance coverage appraisals to estate valuation and liquidation matters.

Machinery & Technical Specialties (“MTS”)

MTS or Machinery & Equipment appraisal is the appraisal of equipment, fixed assets, and other machinery used in course of business. Our appraisals are used for insurance, tax and financial reporting, and banking purposes. Chicago has one of the largest and deepest experience pool of MTS appraisers.

Appraisal Review

ASA accredited ARM reviewers offer logical, understandable appraisal reviews conforming to ASA methodology and complying with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), as well as specific standards such as IRS guidelines, and, when appropriate, other professional international standards.

In addition to producing professional, USPAP compliant reviews, many ARM reviewers have experience in providing expert witness services and litigation support.
